If you decide to travel by sea you will have to go to the port of Sorrento, reachable on foot from Piazza Tasso in less than five minutes.

Ferry: 

From Sorrento to Positano, ferries depart approximately every two hours with the Alilauro company. The Lucibello company has introduced a route that connects Sorrento to Positano and the ferry leaves at 7:40am and takes about 40 minutes. The ticket price is around €15 per person, one way, and can be purchased online. As a resident, I recommend checking the weather conditions in advance to see if the ferries have been canceled due to bad weather or rough waves.

You can bring luggage, strollers, animals and bicycles for a small fee ranging from €2.10 to €6.30. The regional ferry service that connects Sorrento with the Amalfi Coast is active only during the summer season, from April to the end of October.

From the Port of Sorrento you can rent a private transfer, sea taxi, it is a fantastic experience as well as efficient. You can also consider giving yourself a dinner on the beach of Positano and be accompanied by a professional skipper who will wait for you at the pier and take you back to Sorrento.
