If you prefer to travel independently another travel alternative is taking public transport, thankfully there is a direct bus you can take from Sorrento taking you to Positano. You can take the Sita bus that is scheduled in the Piazza Giovanni Battista de Curtis next to the Sorrento Circumvesuviana station.

Sorrento to Positano: By Sea

If you are in Sorrento you can also reach Positano by sea by taking a ferry or renting a private boat transfer, depending on the comfort you want to travel with, the number of people traveling with you and the available budget. If you decide to travel by sea you will have to go to the port of Sorrento, reachable on foot from Piazza Tasso in less than five minutes.

Ferry: 

From Sorrento to Positano, ferries depart approximately every two hours with the Alilauro company. The Lucibello company has introduced a route that connects Sorrento to Positano and the ferry leaves at 7:40am and takes about 40 minutes. The ticket price is around €15 per person, one way, and can be purchased online. As a resident, I recommend checking the weather conditions in advance to see if the ferries have been canceled due to bad weather or rough waves.

You can bring luggage, strollers, animals and bicycles for a small fee ranging from €2.10 to €6.30. The regional ferry service that connects Sorrento with the Amalfi Coast is active only during the summer season, from April to the end of October.

Private Transfer:

From the Port of Sorrento you can rent a private transfer, sea taxi, it is a fantastic experience as well as efficient. You can also consider giving yourself a dinner on the beach of Positano and be accompanied by a professional skipper who will wait for you at the pier and take you back to Sorrento. There are several skippers who offer this service and the price varies by the time and type of boat you will choose.
