Visiting Sorrento in August 2024 – Our Complete Guide

If you’re looking to experience Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast in the most magical and enchanting way, especially if you’re visiting for the first time, August is the most for you to visit. The hottest month to visit Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast is without a doubt the month of August and is always considered the best time to visit the beautiful villages of the coast. Sorrento may be hot, but is always considered the best choice to base yourself amongst the villages of the Sorrento and Amalfi Coast, as the Town itself is quite flat, so there’s not a lot of walking or steps.

There is such a vast variety of activities you can do from visiting the ancient Pompeii Ruins to visiting the most picturesque and instagrammable coastal towns such as Positano, Ravello and Amalfi, and of course experience one of the most famous islands in the world, Capri. All of our apartments, villas and suites are very relaxing and located in Sorrento city centre or in the Old Town, some even have swimming pools and parking and all have modern and up to date facilities.

Visiting Sorrento in August

Things to Do and Events

August is the peak of summer in Italy and on weekdays beaches are filled to a normal capacity but on the weekends it can be very hard to find a place as those who live there also plan to go to the beach.

In the bays of Capri, Positano, Nerano and Galli they can get crowded with boats, swimmers and beach goers. We strongly advise you to arrive for 10am to reserve your sun lounger and umbrella where possible. Most beaches are fully equipped with bars, restaurants, sun loungers and umbrellas to rent. You can find our recommendation’s here of the best Sorrento Beaches and Amalfi Coast Beaches.

Bagni della Regina Giovanna

Visit the Queen Johanna Baths in Sorrento

Naturally the beaches of Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast can get very crowded in August, a personal favourite hidden gem of mine is Bagni della Regina Giovanna, a great option if you’re wanting to enjoy a refreshing dip but in a more tranquil environment. This legendary natural swimming pool has a wonderful pristine seabed, a natural arch that separates the lagoon from the sea and the ruins of the Roman villa overlooking the coast.

This spectacle of the Gulf of Naples creates the perfect and natural photo opportunity. Before taking a refreshing dip in the crystal waters, we recommend you to take a walk along the clifftop where you can admire and take in the most breathtaking views of the Gulf of Naples and Vesuvius and take some amazing photos.

Weather and Temperature

There is a very small chance of rain in August, the Italian coastal town of Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast have very hot temperatures and plenty of sunshine, making it a popular time of year to visit. Sorrento is at its hottest in August and the temperature in Sorrento can range from around 24°C in the daytime with highs of 29°C in the afternoons. Before leaving, pack proper sun protection as skin burns easily if you’re outside during the hottest hours of the day.

MONTHLY AVERAGE

MIN TEMPERATURE 20.0°C

MAX TEMPERATURE 29.2°C

SUNSHINE HOURS 280

What to Pack

Most Italians take their annual break during August. Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast are amongst the most attractive destinations in Italy, in fact you’re most likely to run into more Italian locals in this month compared to any other time of the year. It’s important to know that on the 15th of August Italians celebrate ‘Ferragosto’, one of the most important days in the Italian summer. You can expect the beach clubs to be full, beach games organised, bonfires, fireworks and lots and lots of dancing!

A key moment of the day is the traditional Ferragosto lunch, usually a barbecue or picnic with family and friends. Also all of our accommodation has air conditioning, useful for the warm nights that generally don’t get any cooler than 20°C.

My personal recommendations of what to pack:

  • Sun cream and protection
  • Swimming costume and beach towel
  • Shorts and Skirts
  • T-shirts and Linen shirts
  • Good walking shoes
  • Sunhat, backpack and travel bag
