Visiting Sorrento in July 2024 – Our Complete Guide

The scent of basil with its age-old Mediterranean fragrance
rises from the streets becoming one

with the sound of the voices on the television,
which are covered with lots of photographs,
reminiscing on beautiful memories.
Then there is my grandfather wearing
a white vest, shorts, leather sandals
and gazes his eyes towards the dazzling reflection of the sun
balancing between the shadow of the pines and the coast,
while the same sunset has moved his heart for more than ninety years.
He puts his right arm around me and every mid July,
he whispers to me,
‘come è bella la stagione’, how beautiful is this season.

Visiting Sorrento in July

Things to Do and Events

One thing is for certain, which no one can deny, July is the most beautiful month to visit Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast and the weather is hot and humid. Considered the middle of the summer season, the parties and festivities are taking place, you feel happiness in the air and see beautiful firework displays in the evening. It’s the month when you’re anticipating an amazing summer holiday after months of working, which is commonly taken in August in Italy, or simply for those who while still working, enjoy a quick break in one of the Marina beach clubs.

Sorrento faces the Gulf of Naples so is exposed to pleasant and cool breezes and after spending a few days in the cities like Rome, Florence or Venice you will always find that spending a few days on the coast is definitely worth your while. So hot days and pleasant evenings in July are ideal for spending your days at the by the sea, renting a boat and exploring the Island of Capri, booking a tour along the Amalfi Coast or simply just relaxing on the beach until sunset.

Sorrento & Amalfi Coast Beaches

On weekdays beaches are filled to a normal capacity but on the weekends it can be very hard to find a place as those who live there also plan to go to the beach. In the bays of Capri, Positano, Nerano and Galli they can get crowded with boats, swimmers and beach goers. We strongly advise you to arrive for 10am to reserve your sun lounger and umbrella where possible. Most beaches are fully equipped with bars, restaurants, sun loungers and umbrellas to rent.

It is very easy to reach the beaches in Sorrento, both in Marina Grande and Marina Piccola, for those staying in a Guesthouse, Holiday home or Hotel in the centre of Sorrento, the distance is very short, you just have to walk to the Public Gardens (Villa Comunale) and from there either use the lift (cost per adult per ride €1.80 or use the steps). For those who have a car or scooter you must head towards the Sorrento Harbour (Porto di Sorrento) where you will find a space to park your vehicle in one of the two private car parks.

What to Pack

First things first, be sure to pack proper sun protection, the weather can be very hot and at times it may be hard to find shady spots so you want to make sure you are not at risk of harming your skin. Light clothing is ideal from linen shirts to sundresses and shorts, these are great options to wear during the day, another good tip is to avoid wearing dark colours like black, grey and brown as they tend to absorb the heat of the sun much more which can make you very uncomfortable.
