Complete Guide to Amalfi Coast in 2024

Considered as one of the most beautiful stretches of coast in the world, the Amalfi Coast offers unique views, plunging cliffs hanging over the Mediterranean Sea, with its picturesque villages and famous hiking trails. Occupying the southern side of the Sorrentine peninsula, the breathtaking trip is one of the world’s great rides.  The scenic drive starts from Sorrento, runs through Positano, the fishing villages of Praiano, Furore and Amalfi and continues until it reaches Ravello.

You can also find here the tiny church of Sant’Anna which is well worth a visit and if you’re lucky enough to be in Sorrento during the month of July there is the Festival of St Anna that takes place where you’ll be able to see the whole of the Marina Grande lit up beautifully. The cafes, hotels and restaurant on the edge of the sea often host special dinners and parties for the firework show at midnight on this day.

Amalfi Coast | UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Amalfi Coast has been described on the UNESCO World Heritage List as “outstanding example of a Mediterranean landscape, with exceptional cultural and natural scenic values resulting from its dramatic topography and historical evolution“.

Its incredible ride along the rocky Amalfi Coastline, with stunning sceneries, historic ruins and amazing villas, make the Amalfi Coast a must-see destination on your travel bucket-list. The two main tourist destinations are Positano and Amalfi, followed by the incredible views of Ravello and the local and atmosphere offered by the tiny village of Praiano.

Positano Spiaggia Grande

Positano

A must see if visiting the Amalfi Coast, Positano is the first cliffside village on the most amazing Amalfi Coastal drive and one of the most popular places in Europe, both for travellers and Instagram models. Have your camara at the ready and wear your best clothes because this gorgeous little town is every photographer and travel blogger’s dream.

It is like nothing you will have ever seen before. This picturesque, romantic town is perched on the hillside with pastel- coloured houses nestled above the water, lemon groves and amazing villas that offer great views of the stunning coastline.

  • The Spiaggia Grande, is a great spot for soaking up the atmosphere and the scenery of Positano with its main beach and the most amazing back drop to take some gorgeous photos, a must if you are visiting Positano.
  • Fornillo, is quieter and smaller than the Spiaggia Grande, it is accessible in 10 minutes by a pretty coastal path starting from the main beach/ferry dock in the town of Positano.
  • Arienzo, spectacular setting and fabulous atmosphere a very quiet and relaxing beach (a little bit rocky so bring water shoes).
  • Laurito, far away from the bustle of the other beaches, it is very quaint and there’s one of the most popular beach clubs/restaurants on the beach of the Amalfi Coast, Da Adolfo restaurant.

Praiano

Perched on the ridge of Monte Sant’Angelo and lying between Positano and Amalfi, Praiano is a serene fishing town still unknown to many visitors but absolutely worth seeing. Consisting of two tiny villages, Vettica Maggiore and Praiano, this seaside resort offers the best views of the Amalfi Coast away from the tourist crowd, in Praiano you will find authentic culture, relaxing spots and natural beauty.

If you plan to visit the Amalfi Coast from Sorrento, the narrow, winding road from Positano to Praiano gives you the most breathtaking views. In Praiano, it’s absolutely necessary to have lunch (in my opinion, there are the best restaurants on the Amalfi Coast) make sure to visit the Basilica San Gennaro, the Guard Tower and the Beaches.

Amalfi

Tucked in between mountains and sea, Amalfi is a graceful place with great traditions, artistic monuments and beautiful landscapes. With its glorious history as a powerful maritime republic since at least the 6th century. The town of Amalfi starts at the water’s edge with a pretty promenade along the bay and a little harbour where you can take the ferry and hydrofoil to Positano, Capri and Sorrento.

Piazza del Duomo, clustered with elegant shops and cafes (Pasticceria Andrea Pansa is a must), is considered the heart of the village where the dramatic cathedral of Sant’Andrea is set. The Duomo of Sant’Andrea is a truly beautiful structure and it is also the towns most important sight. It is worth visiting the Museo della Carta (Paper Museum) to see how paper products are made by hand.

Ravello

Located high up in the mountains, Ravello is a terrace over the sea and one of the most romantic places along the Amalfi Coast. The perfect town to stay for those who love peace and quiet and stupendous views.

Ravello is a tiny village that sits back from the coast there is no direct beach access, allowing those who stay to enjoy peaceful evenings with few crowds and spectacular views. The village is perched on top of a cliff overlooking the sea and villages of Minori and Maiori and it boasts an interesting Church, two Villas called Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo with stunning gardens. The town is largely pedestrianised with steep flights of stairs. The heart of the town is Piazza del Vescovado.
